System of Record
The authoritative version of some data (source of truth): new facts land here first, each represented exactly once, typically normalized. If another system disagrees, this on e is right by definition.
What is it?
Cutting across the operational/analytical divide: the system of record holds authoritative data — written first, represented exactly once. Derived data is everything produced from it: lose it and you can rebuild from the source.
What I learned
Nothing about PostgreSQL or Redis makes it a source of truth or derived store - it’s how my application uses it. Annotating architecture diagrams with “authoritative” vs “derived from X” makes confusing systems legible.
