HTAP
Hybrid transactional/analytical processing: one engine promising OLTP and analytics without ETL. Often secretly two engines behind one interface; earns its keep when one app genuinely needs both (e.g., fraud detection).
What is it?
HTAP promises the end of the warehouse dance. Two caveats: many are two engines behind one interface, and the warehouse’s join-everything role remains. Legit case: a single application needing both patterns at once — fraud detection is the standard example. broader trend: the bigger the scale, the more specialized systems become; the era of one-size-fits-all databases is over (Stonebraker’s thesis).
What I learned
Specialization wins at scale. When choosing a “do-everything” database, check whether it’s really one engine or a stitched pair.
