Data-intensive Applications

An app is data-intensive when managing data is the hard part -storing large volumes, handling a torrent of changes, staying consistent through failures and concurrency -not raw computation.

What is it?

Most everyday software is bottlenecked by data, not CPU. The defining challenges: storing big datasets, processing change at speed, keeping data consistent while machines crash and users act concurrently, and staying available through failures.

What I learned

“Data-intensive” ≠ “big data”. It’s about where the difficulty lives. If my app’s hard problems are not about data, it’s architecture should be chosen around data-system trade-offs, not language or framework benchmarks.
