Data Infrastructure
The standard parts data-intensive apps are assembled from: databases, caches, search indexes, stream processors, and batch processors — glued together by application code.
What is it?
Nobody builds storage from scratch. You combine: databases (store and find data), caches (remember expensive results), search indexes (keyword queries), stream processors (react to events now), batch processors (periodically crunch accumulated data). Backend app code is usually stateless — anything that must survive between requests lives in this infrastructure.
What I learned
The craft isn’t inventing these parts; it’s choosing among dozens of options per category. And there is no “best” — every choice trades one virtue for another.
